A woman would be interviewed and tell the viewing audience the awful hardships in her life. Then she'd receive a gift, meant to help alleviate her suffering--usually a set of new appliances: washing machine, vacuum cleaner, etc. I always felt what the poor thing really needed was two weeks on the beach somewhere with a good book and tray of margaritas. To your point, "Queen for a Day" addressed specific issues and offered real (unglamorous) help of a practical nature.
